The Petland Connection

Why families should be concerned about The Barking Boutique’s (Grandville, MI) connection to Petland.

The Barking Boutique and Petland not only share the same broker, Levi Graber (Blue Ribbon Puppies), but the same Iowa “model kennels” as the Petland stores located in Kennesaw Georgia, The Mall of Georgia and Sarasota Florida, all owned by Brad Parker.

Why should families be concerned?

Petland is being sued for fraud.

Petland is the world’s largest franchise puppy retailer with over 80 box stores in the United States. Last year, the Animal Legal Defense Fund announced a pet store retail fraud lawsuit against Petland.

“The lawsuit is filed on behalf of a putative nationwide class of consumers victimized by Petland’s predatory business practices of charging premium prices for puppies Petland has “guaranteed” to be healthy—as certified by Petland’s veterinarians—when Petland knows full well it is selling puppies prone to illnesses and other defects, including “puppy-mill” sourced puppies.”

Petland was the source of the Campylobacter outbreak (2017)

(Center for Disease Control) CDC, several states, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS) investigated a multistate outbreak of multidrug-resistant Campylobacter infections. Epidemiologic and laboratory evidence indicated that contact with puppies sold through Petland stores were a likely source of this outbreak. This outbreak investigation is over. Illnesses could continue to occur because people may be unaware of the risk of Campylobacter infections from puppies and dogs.

Vet claims national pet store chain Petland knowingly sells sick puppies (2017) “You name it, they’ve got parasites, bacteria. They’ve got protozoa,” said Good at his Town & Country Veterinary Center in Marrieta, Georgia. “All I know is when I saw it in my office, I saw a lot of problems. Some were 'zoonotic.' Some could be transmitted to people … ‘Wait a second – these kids could get sick from that puppy.’” Good recalled at Petland’s Kennesaw, Georgia store, “They’d open up their freezer and there’d be dead animals in there.

~This is not only a consumer protection issue, but a public health risk for Grandville. Risks increase when vaccinations are missing from importation records.~
